Popularly known as the “Missile Man of India,” Kalam was a pioneering scientist and the 11th President of India (2002–2007). Born on October 15, 1931, in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, Kalam emerged from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most respected leaders.
As Project Director, he led the development of India’s first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III), successfully placing the Rohini satellite into orbit in 1980. He played a key role in the evolution of ISRO’s launch vehicle programs and was instrumental in the development and operationalisation of the AGNI and PRITHVI missile systems.
Beyond his scientific legacy, Kalam was passionate about youth empowerment and nation-building. His books, including Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, and India 2020, continue to inspire generations to dream big and work towards a self-reliant India.
Dr. Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015, leaving behind a lasting legacy of vision, service, and inspiration.
